The magic of an emotive light object aims to capture the phenomenological qualities of its inspiration, The Crucifixion of Saint Peter by Michelangelo Caravaggio. Using clay, wood, and metal, components of the original painting are brought to life in sculptural form, representing the visual and emotive qualities the painting possesses. There is a strong emphasis on the contrast between materials as a means of capturing emotion, in addition to the lighting. The main bodies, executioners and Peter, are sculpted out of clay with curved and linear forms, accentuated by the cascading light representing divinity. The suffering of his death is expressed in the heaviness and material quality of the base and envelope of the sculpture, where the main components are surrounded by a field of nails, symbolic of Peter’s nailing to the cross.
