This project deals with the re-design of Toronto’s underground PATH system with a focus on urbanism, unexpected encounters of multiple publics and enhancing the well being of users through design, art and practice. Spaces of Silence is a poetic exploration of the themes of silence and light. The underlying concept of the project is to re-define silence in public interior spaces and create moments of quietness in a world full of loud noise. The project aims to create intimate and serene spaces of silence that provide space for contemplation and meditation in a commercial environment where silence doesn’t exist as it is constantly disrupted by sound, music, movement, conversation and life, by eliminating sound and enabling life to enter and animate the space through the use of light materiality, natural elements, and art. It functions as an exhibition space that connects above and below ground with smaller spaces of rest and meditation.
