The design of the ground plane is a depiction of society's pessimistic view of the elderly. The decaying apples are used as a motif since apples are powerful fruits that symbolize life. Once an apple begins to soften and bruise, many will choose not to eat it, much like how the elderly often become a burden to the younger demographic. Staircases were chosen since they are what older people have the most difficulty using in terms of mobility. Furthermore, the design includes elements of what the elderly are most sensitive to in architectural work, allowing visitors to emphasize the difficulties associated with navigating an ageing body.
