Using the idea of breaking the boundary of the intimate interior via social media and the act of closely following other’s personal lives digitally because of the COVID-19 pandemic as a point of reference and departure, I was interested in creating a model that represented this uncanny intimate relationship and uncanny openings. The diptych represents this relationship using light paths to symbolize the gaze of virtual onlookers. The physical representation of this private space is misshaped in form—it is quite literally uncanny, or something you wouldn’t normally see just like this relationship or “peering” we perform into the lives of others because of social media is uncanny. Within this relationship, viewers are generally just numbers unless an effort is placed to inform others of their existence in the form of likes, comments, shares, or even posting themselves. Otherwise, they are viewers, but are not themselves being viewed.
