Using The School of Athens fresco painting by Raphael as my starting point for this project; taking this inspiration and abstracting the painting into a physical model. The original painting symbolizes Philosophy, one of the disciplines of the Humanities or areas of human knowledge, which the main room it is painted in, the Stanza Della Segnatura. The Stanza Della Segnatura is just as influential and essential to the history of art and English alike. Arches embody and symbolize strength, and placing the piece into a crafted light space evokes emotional lighting. It was a creative process which considers how to create a feeling with the source of light and the space the viewer is in. Emotions are affected by light. By using a single candle that is lit and hidden behind the model I was able to convey the emotion of warmth, and calmness. Having a light cheesecloth draped over my piece, added to the atmosphere's light airy feeling. The feeling of comfort and no distress. Warm tones mixed beautifully with the wood texture and clean white details.
