Our team was committed to creating a vibrant and dynamic polykatoikia (multi-family home) that transforms the property to not only cater for Dimitra and Panagiotis’s needs, but also the Vatero community. In our design the ground level of the existing house is dedicated to Dimitra and Panagiotis. Moving the couple to the first floor creates a more accessible and flexible space that can better accommodate aging while allowing them to stay in their home. Their new space is transformed into a comfortable and spacious living area with ample windows to allow for abundant sunlight to illuminate the space. The suite is also upgraded with modern amenities that cater to the couple's needs. The main level of the house is converted into three separate units as a valuable resource for those who have been displaced from their homes. We integrated these units into the property, to create a safe and welcoming environment for refugees to rebuild their lives as they become working immigrants. We expanded the garage into a structure hosting three complex programs: greenhouse, nursing station, and café. Our green house provides a space for growing fresh produce, which is used in the café and Dimitra’s Kitchen. The nursing station is an important addition to the community that reflects the changing needs of an aging society. The final addition, the café, creates a job opportunity for refugee’s staying in the main building and a vibrant social hub for the property. This space provides a place for residents and the wider community to gather, socialize, and enjoy delicious food and drinks.
