Finding light in dark times, Jaques Louis David’s death of Marat serves as the main inspiration for this emotive object in light. The monolithic wood block is meant to represent that of Marat’s, an element of the propaganda painting meant to prove that this man does not stop working and is for the people, although history tells us otherwise. The draped acrylic is set to spill over the side of the box, referencing the overflowing water and cloth in the bathtub that Marat was assassinated in as a result of atrocities he committed against his own people during the French Revolution. A small reveal in the wood block references the writing addressing the painting as a gift from David, insinuating the the box itself is a gift and holds something inside when in reality, the only thing in the box is void space.
